“Machines are to a mechanic what books are to an author”

-Henry Ford

The quote from Henry Ford’s book My Life And Work highlights our theme in the month of April; machines. Our mission at MAKE is to educate, inspire, and equip the next generation to win in manufacturing. This month we intend to do this by exploring the machines all around us through our pillars; Read, Build, and Experience. We are honored to have your family onboard, let’s dive in!

READ

The first page of our first book, Blake Explores Manufacturing, highlights one of the main reasons we wrote this book; so that kids see how cool their parents’ work in manufacturing is! Kids are curious about everything. If you work in manufacturing - share with your family what you build. If you know a parent in manufacturing with young children - consider giving them Blake Explores Manufacturing to help them tell the story of what they do to their children, family and friends.

BUILD

It’s April in Minnesota; the return of spring… and the start of road construction. This month, in our build activity, we are focused on construction machines - they are everywhere! Below we outline the impact of our construction machine activity.

  1. Teaching BIG machines are built by people. Construction machines are loud, powerful and full of movement. Kids are drawn to the excitement and are interested how they operate. Connecting the power of the machines with the power and strength of the people who build them will only further develop the understanding of how awesome manufacturing is.

  2. Making a connection to learning and the world around them. Supporting the questions kids have about how machines work, what the machine is doing, the functionality of different machine parts and how they help build the world around us is essential. It strengthens their critical thinking of how machines operate. In turn, they can connect to other things around them.

  3. Building pride and honor to the things built around them. Creating an opportunity for kids to learn how machines are built and their impact, creates pride for the parks, buildings, neighborhoods, and roads we utilize every single day.

Curiosity is king for learning, lead your children to be curious about manufacturing early by asking questions! Start asking your kids - does this construction machine dig, move, lift, mix, level, and compact? Let them think through what the machine looks like, the parts within it and determine the powerful tool it’s bringing to the site - does it dig, move, lift, mix, level, or compact?
