Communication

Communication is one of three character traits described in Blake Prepares For Manufacturing. The three character traits in the book teach Future Makers how to act to win in manufacturing. Communication is critical in manufacturing and effective communicators use more than one type of communication. Within the Communication chapter, Blake learns there are four different types of communication: Verbal, Non-Verbal, Written, and Active Listening. All are equally important and used in every conversation we have.

Below is a summary of each communication type and advice for parents to support the development of your Future Makers' communication skills.

Verbal = Talking. Encourage kids to explain things in their own words. Provide feedback and ask open-ended questions that require more than simple responses.

Non-Verbal = How You Talk. Model positive non-verbal cues with your children, such as eye contact, calm posture, and tone. Point out when your child is using good non-verbal communication.

Written = Typing/Writing. Encourage your children to write notes, letters or journals to either inform or remind themselves or others.

Active Listening = How You Listen. Show your children attentive listening: (1) without interrupting (2) using reflective summary by repeating what they said and (3) asking questions that show you heard what they said and understood them.

For children to be successful in communication, they need role models to lead them through it. Model, create opportunities, and challenge them to apply it at home, church, school, and sports. With this approach, they don’t just speak, they learn to speak clearly and connect meaningfully with others around them.
