Measurement
Measurement is one of three manufacturing skills that we believe are primary skills which enable the next generation to win in manufacturing. It is also the first chapter of Blake Prepares for Manufacturing where the character Blake interacts with the product being built at his Dad’s manufacturing business. Readers learn about three specific types of measurement; count, distance, and weight.
Why measurement? This skill is used not only in manufacturing but all around us. Introduction and development of this to the next generation can be built on over time with a lasting impact of success in their career and daily life. Below are a few examples of how you can introduce measurement and see it grow with your Future Maker.
Compare sizes: Which cup is taller? Who has the longer stick?
Talk about quantity (count); only 3 snacks per day.
Let kids measure ingredients while cooking.
Use rulers, tape measures, and clocks around the house.
Involve them in home projects like measuring rooms, wood, fabric, or distances.
Talk about your budgets, speed, and time.
Remember! Measurement takes practice. Support your child’s curiosity and problem solving - it is essential to the hands-on learning of it. As you lead your Future Makers through their development and learning with the skill of measurement, be sure to encourage effort and thinking, not just the “right answers” and ask reflective questions: “What would you do differently next time?”
