Curiosity Partnered with a Passion to Build!

Stacking blocks into towers, taking toys apart to see how they work, or spending hours with homemade creations - all passions of our Future Makers. It’s problem solving, creativity with purpose directly related to the world of manufacturing and some truly awesome careers.

Within MAKE Publishing’s newest book - Blake Prepares for Manufacturing, each chapter follows the main character, Blake, as he learns important manufacturing skills and character traits. The skills and traits within represent a strong foundation for those who desire to win in manufacturing.

Manufacturing skills are specific actions that can be taught and as manufacturers ourselves. We believe there are three primary skills which will enable the next generation to win in manufacturing.

  1. Measurement: To determine the size (weight or distance) of an object.

  2. Tool Identification: To select and apply the right tool for a specific task.

  3. Time Management: To combine your to-do list with your calendar.

Building Skills Grow With Your Child

These three skills can easily be introduced at a young age and further developed as your child grows. Here is how building within the above skill sets can evolve over time:

  • Early childhood: Counting blocks, magnetic tiles, sandbox structures.

  • Elementary: LEGO kits, craft builds, beginner robotics, chores list.

  • Middle school: Build furniture, change a car battery, fix a bike, develop a schedule, hang a picture.

Each stage will build confidence and competence of the skills and support the Future Maker to see themselves as a capable builder.

How Parents Can Support Future Makers
Start now! Both books by MAKE Publishing, and our newsletters contain activities designed to engage kids in manufacturing. Further, the world around us is filled with opportunities to learn. Reviewing the contents of your garage, cleaning a car (including the engine compartment), measuring things, and watching home construction are all great ways to begin the journey of education in manufacturing. The key to a successful activity is for kids to ask; “How does that work?

Purchase your book today to help continue on our mission and bring the experience of manufacturing into a classroom.
